GO: SPACEMAN
This might be old news for some, but I wanted to include Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso’s Spaceman on the blog as a recent example of great consistency and balance between design, typography and art. Dave Johnson, who created the covers, is one of the very few artists in comics today that has a great eye for graphic design and typography. Often — as seen here — he’ll design the book logos and dress as well as (what he is mainly known for) provide the artwork. The Spaceman covers in particular show off a combination of uniform restraint in the design, using the title as a knockout device — a great trick to minimise type intrusion on the art while at the same time gelling both together — and using colour punches and graphic devices in the art itself to bind everything together.
